What Causes Depression


There have been plenty of articles written on the subject of what causes depression, but most of them are not very helpful. Many of them will tell you how to prevent this condition, and some of them will offer advice on how to cope with it once it is already present.

But these are all merely symptoms of a mental disorder, not actual physical causes. And they usually tell nothing about what causes depression, other than what life experiences lead to depressed moods, which in turn leads to a plunge into deep sadness and unhappiness. What causes depression is a question that deserves a much more thorough investigation.

In fact, there are two primary causes: genetics and environment. Genes determine what your body will build around, and it will build it with the same chemical and biochemical makeup as any other system. The problem comes when the system gets overloaded with too many chemicals or toxins. That happens with poor nutrition, drug abuse, or even the withdrawal from addictive drugs.

Genetic factors are known to play a role in depression. However, environmental factors, while not entirely under your control, can contribute to or trigger depression. For example, stress can trigger or result in an episode, and it has been proven that the level of stress someone is under at the time of a panic attack or major depression episode is directly related to the intensity and length of the attacks. So if your job involves stressful tasks that are repetitive or routine, or if your family tends to over-scrutinize certain things, then there is a strong possibility that you will suffer from depression.

There are also psychological and environmental factors that can result in depression. These include the way that a person’s relationships are constructed (or constituted) and the amount of negative self-talk that they are exposed to.

Studies have shown that when people are constantly having one-sided conversations with others, particularly those that are negative or judgmental, they are much more likely to suffer from depression. So even if you don’t have a major problem with self-talk or with negative thoughts in general, the constant chatter about it can create a domino effect on your mood.

So you see, the first step in learning what causes depression is to learn how the mind works, and to look for signs of unhealthy patterns that may be present in your life. Once you have a better understanding of what causes depression, it will be easier to help yourself recover from it, and hopefully one day, to keep it under control permanently.
