Types of Gymnastics Moves

Through the ages, gymnastics has been around and you’ve probably seen it perform it’s role in many dances that have been created. For those who have not seen it, here are a few of the gymnastics movements that are found in many of today’s dances.

Water polo: You might be surprised to learn that you’ve seen this in your lifetime. It was also used as the Olympic event for many years. It is performed by both men and women, and often it’s a competition that is won by the person who catches the most water with the most flexible arms.

The lock step: There are many variations of this skill, but it is basically done by the stepping leg. This is something that is done with both feet simultaneously, and one step out of place can cause the next one to miss. The person performing the move is then given a signal by the coach to continue or stop the movement.

Balance: This is most often done with the freestyle dance, but it is used in many other dance forms as well. When performing this dance move, the gymnast tries to stay balanced and remain in control. It’s often taught at many gymnastics camps and schools.

Trapeze: There is a gymnastics move called the trapeze. This is a huge, open piece of rope that is stretched between two hoops. Once it reaches a certain point, it swings in a 360 degree arc, much like a trapeze. People that do not know how to do this correctly can fall off and hurt themselves.

Imposter – In this variation of the hurdle, a person is given a standard hurdle that is made from cloth with no difficult adjustments to make. It then is inflated so that it looks like it has just been stepped on and then becomes inflated again with a person in it. In a gymnastics demonstration, it is taught that a person can lose their balance in this way.

Jumping: There are a number of jumps in gymnastics that are extremely popular dance moves. These include a series of leaps that happen so quickly that some think they’re being pulled in different directions. The moves have many variations, and one can show this at many types of school functions.

High Kicks: In this type of gymnastics, a number of feet are put together in pairs, with each pair alternating their kicking. This means that a lot of energy is conserved through the practice. If done properly, it can become quite difficult to stop people from landing on their heels when they try this move.

Pommel Horse: This is similar to the same horse but uses a smaller equine version of the maneuver. It can be done in many different positions and can be adapted for many different types of horses as well.

Pole vault: This is very similar to the pommel horse and is done in a similar fashion. The gymnast will try to jump from a standing position and land on their feet.

Strategy: One of the most popular moves in gymnastics is the strategy. It is usually taught in schools at a young age. The strategy, or vaulting jump, is a technique that is done by a gymnast and has done repeatedly until the gymnast reaches a certain height.

Middle splits: These are the exercises that are done between all of the basic gymnastics moves. These can be done between almost any type of exercise and can be combined with the basic gymnastics moves to add a bit more variety to a routine.
